What should modellers focus on in the future? Manageable complexity, bombproof reliability, open data and methods, obsessive QA, backwards compatibility, structured data, transparent implementation, self-documenting models, well-documented code and manuals, consistent user interface, industry standard scripting and interfaces, sustained reputation for quality software. Actually, there is one transportation forecasting software that bests all others in terms of reliability and usability and consistency. Emme.
Three of my favorite things about Emme? First, strong technical rigor, up-to-date with research, the latest thinking. Second, Emme is fast. The clients of today want instant results; the path-based assignment allows us to instantly respond to any questions that might emerge from a particular run, and SOLA is a game-changer: two to three times as fast as the standard traffic assignment and the closure is incredible. Third is the cool factor. We are going to use Emme Modeller as the engine/driver/dashboard for our activity-based model.
We, the users, can do just about anything with Emme. The APIs now are amazing, incredible. Thanks to INRO for doing such an excellent job.
When beginning our toll forecast projects, software was a major decision point in determining our involvement... Do we have software that can provide robust results to satisfy our client, our management and our lawyers? Key features were replicability and transparency. We must be able to run hundreds of scenarios consistently and repeatably. And there is no room to have black boxes or proprietary processes... We were very happy that INRO was able to deliver us a product satisfying these requirements.
Software support is a critical element in selecting and using software. Don't for a minute take that for granted. Anyone who has worked with INRO knows how friendly they are, how timely they are, how professional they are.
INRO's training courses are unique among my experience with vendor training. Going back to my first Emme course in the early 1990s, I remember the admonition: 'This is not a software training course. It is a modeling course that uses software'. That subtle angle on instruction makes a huge difference in what students expect to take away, i.e.knowledge in addition to skill. Thanks for your hard work keeping up INRO's excellent tradition of quality instruction.
The Emme APIs are super-easy to use, really intuitive. Python is a relatively easy language to learn, lots of resources out there, and our code is up on github so you can go grab it there.
We have had a very good experience implementing the Sydney Strategic Travel Model using Emme 4. Thank you INRO for providing such a wonderful platform, which allows us user-friendly powerful methods, allows us to combine Emme with outside other powerful applications.
